Buy Books for the Holidays 2009!
Tags: Sign Up 14 commentsIt's that time of year! The Halloween decorations are getting packed away, and the stores have turned their full attention to Christmas. Plans are frantically being made to have the perfect holiday season, and we are all examining our budgets to figure out how we're going to make the dollars stretch into satisfying meaningful gifts.
We have a suggestion for you! Buy books.
Books are truly the best gifts and there is a book out there for everyone on your list. Once again, at Buy Books for the Holidays we encourage you to make this holiday season a literary season by:
1) Buying books for as many people on your list as you can
2) Donating to literacy charities for year end giving
Additionally, we encourage you to support your local independent bookstores if you can! We'll be spotlighting as many as we can on the blog throughout the following months. (If you own an independent bookstore, please apply to be spotlighted!)
What can you expect from Buy Books for the Holidays this year?
We'll be introducing you to literacy charities, spotlighting independent bookstores, providing gift suggestions and printable shopping lists, as well as sharing some fun ways you can accessorize your bookish gifts for low cost. And of course, if you need help finding the perfect book for that hard to shop for person on your list? We're here as a community to help you find it!
Why are we doing this?
Everyone on this extremely committed team of bloggers loves books. We believe strongly in the written word, in the importance of a literate society and we recognize that it's up to us make our voices heard about books and reading. You have a lot of options for gifts this holiday season, but we hope you'll work to give a gift with lasting value, a gift that communicates that you care, a gift that has life changing potential. We hope you'll give books as gifts for this holiday.

I have a couple of small non-profits for teens I know would really appreciate a spotlight and love books to arrive, can I tell you about them?

I LOVE this idea. It's so obvious, and yet so easily forgotten. People are intimidated by giving books to friends and loved ones, as if they don't know people well enough to recommend a good read. But really, with just a little thought it is possible to come up with many titles that the people you love will enjoy. I will be posting lists of books I have enjoyed and books that I will be gifting on my blog. (thinkbannedthoughts.wordpress.com) Thank you for a wonderful movement!!

Great idea - I love buying books for people. Even if they are not as rabid a reader as I am I truly think there is a book for everyone out there. Plus they are the best gifts for kids!

Love it! When my friend told me her children always love the books I buy for them I felt like it was one of the highest compliments I had ever received. It made me feel so good! I have such fun trying to find the perfect book. And while I love amazon for it's vast collection, you just can't beat perusing the aisles at your local indie bookstore. I always find my new favorite picture book that way. ;)

Would love to let you know about my new book Christmas at the White House, which spans 50 years of Christmas traditions inside 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. There are more than 400 photos and hundreds of stories, all told by first ladies and their families, including Laura Bush who wrote the introduction to the book.
Go here to read more about the book, www.fifeanddrumpress.com or click on my name on this post.

I work with the non-fiction author Seymour Simon on his website and other media. Thank you for including his books among your recommendations. This is a wonderful idea, and we'll post on our website as well, encouraging teachers and parents to check out "Buy Books for the Holidays 2009!"
