Teens Below Reading Level
Tags: YA 1 commentsIt's fantastic to foster a love for reading and literacy at a young age; but if a child is struggling with reading, it is no picnic to be gifted with books. However, Orca Publishers have a special group of "short high-interest novels with contemporary themes, written expressly for teens reading below grade level" published under the Orca Soundings imprint.
These books are short, have some images, larger print and a lower reading level. But the best thing about these books for teens reading below grade level is that the content is geared towards their age. You can encourage struggling readers to engage in these books, without embarrassing them by giving them easy-readers with dull child content.
Dealing with everything from bull riding, diving, and love, to sex, prostitution, and peer pressure. These books all have a bit of a morale code written into them, and there are lots of discussion questions available to engage your teen in the book he/she has just read.
Cheers, Monica.

Monica - thanks for these ideas. I think that I often assume a below-reading-level teen doesn't like to read, when in fact, with the right material (match on level and interest in content), we'll catch their attention.
It's not necessarily that they don't like to read, but that they're frutrated by books being "too hard" or "not interesting"
